Litigation support lawyers and investigation teams for legal departments

Alpinum Solutions provides litigation support lawyers, document reviewers and staff for internal investigations to legal departments, compliance functions and law firms in Switzerland, Germany and Austria – from junior reviewers to experienced team leads, as individuals or teams, part-time or full-time. The professionals work via staff leasing or freelancing under the direction of your investigation lead or the lead law firm; Alpinum does not provide legal advice itself.

Typical triggers are proceedings that require large data sets to be reviewed, a regulatory request with a short deadline, a report that starts an internal investigation, or a wave of similar claims. We select by language, platform experience, industry and seniority. If the main issue is a backlog that has to be cleared quickly, start with legal review and investigation support for backlogs.

Typical assignments in litigation, investigations and eDiscovery

First-level review in an eDiscovery project

A data set sits on the review platform and has to be coded for relevance, issues and confidentiality. Junior and experienced reviewers work through the protocol while a team lead handles quality control. Duration: a few weeks to several months. Workload: usually full-time; team size follows data volume and deadline.

Staff for an internal investigation

The investigation lead in legal, compliance or an instructed law firm needs additional lawyers for chronologies, analysis of emails and records, interview preparation and minutes. Duration: a few weeks to a few months. Workload: part-time or full-time depending on the phase.

Case handling in the whistleblowing system

Reports are piling up or the responsible role is vacant. An experienced legal or compliance professional logs reports, checks them for plausibility under your policy, maintains the case file and prepares decisions. Duration: several months. Workload: often part-time.

Mass litigation support

Many similar lawsuits or claims come in. Professionals screen incoming matters, maintain the case overview, compile documents for outside counsel and track deadlines. Duration: several months or longer. Workload: full-time, as a team if needed.

Regulatory request with a short deadline

A supervisory or investigating authority asks for documents. The team gathers records, reviews them as instructed by the legal department, redacts and prepares the production. Duration: a few weeks. Workload: full-time, often with peaks before the deadline.

Litigation support lawyers: what a review and investigation team takes on

Review to protocol

The team codes to a protocol set by your legal department or the lead law firm: relevance, issues, confidentiality, privileged correspondence, redactions. The team lead collects open questions of interpretation and clarifies them with the lead so that the protocol is applied consistently.

Second-level quality control

Experienced reviewers check samples, reconcile diverging coding and escalate borderline cases to the lead. The team lead reports progress and error rates at the frequency you set.

Working on your eDiscovery platform

Experience with the review platform in use is part of the requirements profile. Data collection, processing and technical analysis stay with your IT or your eDiscovery provider; the team reviews the documents.

Support in internal investigations

Preparing the facts, building chronologies, preparing and minuting interviews, drafting sections of the investigation report. The legal assessment and conclusions remain with the investigation lead.

Languages and confidentiality

Where documents are multilingual, the team is put together by language. It works in your systems with the access rights you grant; confidentiality agreements are part of every assignment.

Profiles for review, litigation support and investigations – junior to senior

Junior (0–2 years)

Document reviewer: first-level review to protocol, coding and tagging, document lists, basic research on the facts.

Experienced (3–6 years)

Second-level reviewer, litigation support specialist or investigation associate: quality control, privilege review, chronologies, interview preparation, handling of whistleblower reports.

Senior (7+ years)

Review team lead or interim investigation counsel: leads the team, aligns protocol and priorities with the lead, reports on progress and acts as the interface to outside counsel, forensics and IT.

What your company manages

Scope, protocol, access rights and reporting line are set by the investigation lead or the lead law firm. Under staff leasing, professional direction generally lies with you and the professional is integrated into your organisation. Under freelancing, they work independently within the agreed mandate. Legal assessment, decisions on measures and contact with courts and authorities stay with you and your lawyers.

Engagement models for review and investigation teams in Switzerland, Germany and Austria

Review and investigation teams usually work under staff leasing because they work in your systems and under your instructions every day. A defined task, such as quality control by an experienced professional, also suits freelancing. Both are available part-time or full-time, for individuals or teams.

Process: from the order to a review team up to speed

01 · Clarify the scope

We discuss data volume or number of cases, languages, platform, protocol and deadline. This determines team size and the mix of levels.

02 · Profiles within 48 hours

You receive selected profiles of reviewers and team leads from our database of 7,500+ interviewed and vetted legal & compliance professionals and make the choice yourself. We agree the start date together; this is not a guarantee.

03 · Training on the protocol

The lead or the team lead trains the team on protocol and platform. A first test batch shows whether everyone codes consistently before the full volume starts.

04 · Ongoing work and close-out

Progress and quality are reported at your pace, and the team size can be adjusted to the volume. At the end the team hands over documentation and open points. Alpinum remains your contact for contract, extensions and administration.

Frequently asked questions about document review, litigation support and internal investigations

Who leads the review or the investigation?

Your legal department, your compliance function or the law firm you instruct. Alpinum provides the professionals for the team and takes on neither the lead nor the legal assessment.

Do document reviewers need to be admitted to the bar?

Whether bar admission or training in a particular jurisdiction is required is decided by your legal department or the lead law firm. That requirement goes into the profile and drives the selection.

Does Alpinum bring an eDiscovery platform?

No. The team works on the platform of your company, your law firm or your eDiscovery provider. We take platform experience into account in the selection.

Can a professional handle reports from the whistleblowing system?

Yes, under your internal policy: logging, plausibility check, case file and preparation of decisions. Whether an investigation is opened and which measures follow is decided by the responsible function in your company.

How does this page differ from backlog, review & investigation?

This page covers the practice area: reviews in proceedings, eDiscovery and investigation work. The occasion page on backlog, review & investigation describes across practice areas how built-up work is cleared, for example in KYC or a contract portfolio.
