Legal transformation support: interim professionals for CLM implementation and compliance transformation
Alpinum Solutions provides legal transformation support to legal departments and compliance functions in Switzerland, Germany and Austria: professionals for implementing a CLM system, redesigning processes and the organisation of the legal department, and compliance transformation. Profiles range from junior to senior, via staff leasing or freelancing, part-time or full-time, as individuals or project teams. Your company sets the goal, scope and decisions of the project.
Transformation projects rarely fail because of the software; they fail because the team lacks time. Contracts need capturing, templates cleaning up, approval routes defining and users training, while day-to-day work carries on. Alpinum staffs this project work with professionals who know both legal craft and project logic. Once the new system is live, day-to-day running takes over – that is covered by legal & compliance operations. Alpinum does not provide legal advice.
These scenarios are examples of typical projects, not individual client cases.
Typical assignments in transformation projects
Implementing a CLM system
A contract lifecycle management (CLM) system is meant to bring templates, approvals and deadlines into one place. An experienced lawyer leads the legal side: defining contract types and metadata, agreeing the clause library and approval routes with procurement and sales, supporting testing. Duration: 3–9+ months in Alpinum’s experience. Workload: the lead usually full-time, with juniors joining for the migration phase.
Migrating legacy contracts
Thousands of contracts sit as PDFs on shared drives and in mailboxes. A small team records parties, terms, notice periods and special clauses against a consistent grid and flags contracts that need legal review. Duration: a few weeks to months. Workload: full-time, often several people in parallel.
Redesigning the legal department
Requests arrive by email, phone and in the corridor; nobody can see what is open. A senior professional works with the head of legal on a target model: request intake, responsibilities, self-service for standard contracts, working with outside counsel. Duration: several months. Workload: often part-time alongside workshops with the team.
Compliance transformation after growth or a merger
After an acquisition, two sets of policies, controls and training run side by side. A compliance professional merges them into one compliance management system, assigns responsibilities and supports the rollout of new tools for policies and training. Duration: several months. Workload: part-time or full-time, scaled to how many entities are involved.
Setting up a first legal operations function
The legal department wants to manage budget, metrics and systems deliberately but has nobody for it yet. In Alpinum’s experience, reaching a first usable state takes about three months; the function then moves into day-to-day operations. Workload: part-time or full-time.
Legal transformation support: what interim professionals take on in implementation and change
Capturing the starting point and requirements
Which contract types, how many contracts, which approval levels, which systems? The professional records the current state, interviews legal and the business, and writes the functional requirements so that IT and vendors can work with them.
CLM implementation support
Preparing selection criteria, cleaning up templates and clauses before migration, defining approval routes and roles, writing test cases and supporting acceptance. Vendor selection and technical delivery are decided and owned by your company and your IT.
Processes and organisation
Request intake and prioritisation, responsibilities between legal, compliance and the business, guidance for standard contracts, rules for instructing outside counsel.
Compliance transformation
Reviewing and consolidating policies, reassigning controls and responsibilities, adapting training concepts and supporting the rollout of tools for policies, training and evidence from the subject-matter side.
Adoption and handover
A new system only helps if people use it. The professional trains key users, collects feedback in the first weeks after launch and hands over the manual, templates and open items to operations.
Scope
This page covers implementation and change projects with a start and an end. Day-to-day matter management, metrics and outside counsel management are covered by legal & compliance operations, the review and negotiation of individual contracts by commercial contracting & contract management. Software development and system integration are not included.
Profiles for transformation projects: junior, experienced, senior
Junior (0–2 years)
Recording contracts and metadata against a grid, inventorying templates, running test cases, maintaining training material and project documentation.
Experienced (3–6 years)
Building the clause library and playbooks, agreeing approval routes with the business, leading a work package such as migration or training independently.
Senior (7+ years)
Subject-matter project lead or interim legal transformation lead: developing the target model, preparing the steering committee, coordinating vendors and internal functions, addressing resistance in the team.
What stays with your company
You set the project goal, budget, system decision and priorities and name the internal project owner. Under staff leasing, professional direction generally lies with you and the professional works in your project team. Under freelancing, they deliver a defined package, such as migrating a contract portfolio, independently within the agreed mandate.
Engagement models for transformation projects in Switzerland, Germany and Austria
Transformation projects change pace: analysis and migration need a lot of capacity, the phase after launch much less. Workload can be set between 20 and 100 % and adjusted by phase, as a single professional or a project team. Professionals who work with internal systems and committees are usually engaged as temporary legal staff via staff leasing; a clearly defined package also suits freelance lawyers.

The contracting party is Alpinum Solutions AG: staff leasing, also called Personalverleih, or freelancing.

Austria
For transformation projects in Austria, professionals work as freelancers or via staff leasing through the German or the Swiss company.
Limits
Alpinum provides professionals and is neither a law firm nor a software vendor or implementation partner. Legal decisions, system selection and acceptance stay with your company.

In many CLM projects a senior or experienced professional leads while juniors capture the legacy contracts, which keeps the team’s daily rate in check. Worked examples and a comparison with permanent hiring are in the guide cost models in interim legal & compliance.
FAQ on legal transformation and CLM implementation
Does the professional replace the software vendor’s implementation partner?
No. The vendor or its partner configures the system. The professional represents the legal side in the project: contract types, clauses, approvals, testing and training.
When is CLM implementation support worthwhile?
As soon as the internal team cannot handle the project work alongside daily business, for example with a large legacy portfolio or several entities involved. Ideally the professional joins before vendor selection, so that the functional requirements are settled.
Do we need legally trained professionals?
For clauses, playbooks and assessing non-standard terms, yes. For capturing metadata, junior profiles with contract experience working under guidance are often enough.
What happens after go-live?
The first weeks after launch decide whether the system is used. The professional often stays on at reduced workload until feedback has been incorporated; operations then take over under legal & compliance operations.
Can one professional lead both legal and compliance transformation?
For a manageable scope, yes, provided the owners in legal and compliance decide together. With several entities or systems, separate work packages work better.
