Compliance careers in Switzerland: interim roles in KYC, AML and regulatory
Short answer: Contract compliance jobs in Switzerland are usually filled through Personalverleih (Swiss staff leasing, employed by a licensed Swiss provider) or freelancing, most often in KYC, AML, sanctions, regulatory compliance or data protection. A foreign staffing provider may not lease staff into Switzerland (Art. 12(2) AVG). With providers whose main activity is staff leasing, the collective agreement for staff leasing (GAV Personalverleih) also applies to annual salaries up to CHF 148,200 (2026). Cross-border commuters with a Swiss employer stay insured in Switzerland if they telework less than 50% in their country of residence.
This guide is for compliance professionals and lawyers looking for interim roles in Switzerland, including from Germany. It covers the main fields, the skills and languages in demand, the staff leasing rules and what applies to cross-border commuters.
Fields: KYC, AML, sanctions, regulatory and data protection
Interim compliance roles in Switzerland arise mainly at banks, asset managers, insurers and other financial intermediaries, as well as in industrial and trading companies. Typical triggers are remediation projects, periodic reviews, new rules, vacancies and absences.
| Role | Typical tasks | Languages (common) | Typical duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| KYC analyst / KYC officer | Onboarding files, periodic reviews, source of wealth, documentation | German or French, English | Project length |
| AML analyst / transaction monitoring | Alert handling, investigations, recommendations, preparing suspicious activity cases | German or French, English | Until the backlog is cleared or the process is stable |
| Sanctions specialist | Reviewing screening hits, implementing new sanctions packages, updating directives | English, local language | Project- or event-driven |
| Regulatory compliance officer | Gap analyses, directives, implementing new requirements, preparing supervisory contact | German or French, English | Until the requirement is implemented |
| Interim compliance officer / MLRO cover | Running the compliance function, advising the business, training, reporting | Local language, English | Until return or successor |
| Data protection specialist | Records of processing, impact assessments, contracts, data subject requests | German or French, English | Project or part-time mandate |
The mapping is general editorial guidance, not a commitment for any particular assignment; role, languages and duration depend on the individual mandate.
Skills and languages
What counts most is hands-on experience with Swiss rules and clean documentation; demonstrable case work matters more than formal titles.
- Rulebook: knowledge of Swiss anti-money laundering law and the FINMA AML Ordinance. A financial intermediary must designate a qualified AML unit (Art. 24 GwV-FINMA) and may, under conditions, appoint external experts for it (Art. 25(4) GwV-FINMA).
- Method: a risk-based approach, traceable files and clear decision papers.
- Systems: experience with core banking, screening and monitoring tools helps you start fast.
- Languages: German and English in German-speaking Switzerland, French and English in the Romandie, Italian in Ticino. Further languages help with client files from specific markets.
- Formal functions: interim professionals can take on roles such as compliance officer with regulatory responsibility, depending on the company's requirements and the regulatory rules. For the MLRO, regulatory requirements may rule out an external mandate or require staff leasing.
How to show case experience, systems and languages in your profile is covered in CV and profile for interim assignments.
Staff leasing and the GAV: what applies to you
In staff leasing you are employed by a Swiss provider holding a cantonal licence (Art. 12 AVG); the client company gives you professional instructions. A German or other foreign provider may not lease you to a Swiss company (Art. 12(2) AVG). The alternative is freelancing; both models are compared in Interim and project work for lawyers.
- GAV Personalverleih: the declaration of general applicability runs until 31 December 2027. It covers providers whose main activity is staff leasing. Salaries above the maximum insured salary under accident insurance, CHF 148,200 a year in 2026 (Art. 22(1) UVV), are excluded. Whether your salary is above that threshold has to be checked case by case.
- Contract: the employment contract is generally in writing and states the work, place, start, duration, hours, salary and benefits (Art. 19 AVG).
- Notice: for open-ended assignments, at least 2 days in the first 3 months and 7 days in months 4 to 6 (Art. 19(4) AVG).
- Duration: the AVG sets no statutory maximum assignment duration.
- Moving to the client: clauses that make it harder for you to join the client later are void (Art. 19(5) AVG).
Your rights in staff leasing are covered in Staff leasing from the professional's perspective. Alpinum Solutions provides compliance professionals through staff leasing and freelancing, part-time or full-time. For staff leasing, Alpinum holds a cantonal licence, and a SECO licence for staff leasing abroad.
Cross-border commuters: social security, tax and registration
Cross-border commuters with a Swiss employer stay insured in Switzerland if they telework less than 50% (no more than 49.9%) of their working time in their country of residence. The basis is a multilateral framework agreement that has applied since 1 July 2023 to Germany, Austria and France, among others, and since 1 January 2024 to Italy.
- A1 certificate: the Swiss employer applies to its compensation office; the certificate is valid for up to 3 years and can be renewed. The agreement covers telework between 25% and 49.9% and does not apply to the self-employed.
- Tax, Germany–Switzerland: the country of residence taxes the commuter's salary; Switzerland may levy no more than 4.5% withholding tax (Art. 15a of the Germany–Switzerland tax treaty). Commuter status is lost only after more than 60 work-related non-return days per calendar year. Full home-office days at your residence do not count as non-return days.
- Registration or permit: EU/EFTA nationals taking up a job with a Swiss company for up to 3 months only need to register, at the latest the day before starting; longer assignments require a permit.
The framework agreement covers social security only, not tax. Check your personal situation before the assignment.
Frequently asked questions about interim compliance work in Switzerland
Do I need banking experience for interim compliance roles?
For KYC, AML and transaction monitoring roles at banks and asset managers, financial sector experience is usually required. Companies expect you to review and document files to Swiss standards. For data protection, sanctions at trading companies or general compliance roles, experience from industry, insurance or consulting also counts. Junior roles are available in large review projects.
Which languages matter for compliance jobs in Switzerland?
English is the working language in most compliance teams. Add the local language: German in Zurich and Basel, French in Geneva and Lausanne, Italian in Lugano. Speaking both German and French gives you more options on national projects. Further languages help with client files from specific markets.
Can I work in Switzerland on an interim basis from Germany?
Yes, as a cross-border commuter or by moving. In staff leasing you need a licensed Swiss provider, because a German provider may not lease staff into Switzerland (Art. 12(2) AVG). For up to 3 months, EU/EFTA nationals only need to register. With telework below 50%, you stay insured in Switzerland with an A1 certificate.
Does the GAV Personalverleih apply to compliance professionals?
Yes, if your annual salary does not exceed CHF 148,200 (2026) and the provider's main activity is staff leasing. Above that, you are excluded from the declaration of general applicability. The AVG and the Code of Obligations apply in any case, for example to the written contract, notice periods and sick pay.
